Why I Care About This Work So Much
My Wake-Up Call
I didn’t start focusing on my health for a number on the scale or aesthetics. The moment for me started about a year or so after my late husband passed away suddenly.
Witnessing his death and the ‘what ifs’ that go alongside that really screw with your thoughts, but can also enlighten you.
I learned to appreciate life in a different way, to take care of and honor the body I’ve been given - to keep it strong, healthy and feeling good as long as I’m here.
Longevity is My Why
I also think about the odds that may be stacked against me.
Both my grandmothers had breast cancer.
Heart disease runs in my family, as does high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes.
My mom just got diagnosed with osteoporosis and I just found out I have osteopenia, and I damn well plan to reverse that! (I’m still pissed about this one.)
Predisposition doesn’t mean a guarantee. There’s a saying in this space I surround myself in that goes, “genetics loads the gun, but environment pulls the trigger”. That phrase has stuck with me from the beginning of my journey.
Sure, it might sound morbid, but when people talk about getting old and accept getting sick, becoming frail and immobile, or feeling like crap as par for the course, I just can’t stomach it.
I know that if I don’t proactively take care of my body now—through movement, nutrition, stress management, sleep and consistent habits—I won’t have the kind of future I envision for myself. And that future is thriving.
This is about longevity. It’s about feeling strong and capable as I age. It’s about protecting my brain, my bones, and my heart. And why I’m so passionate about helping others feel this way too.
Your story might look different than mine but if you’ve read this far, I bet you want to feel good and strong in your body too. It doesn’t happen by accident but by small, intentional choices made daily.
Start Asking Better Questions
This is exactly why I believe in using this time of year to reflect—not in a heavy way, but with some curiosity.
What do you want your health to feel like next year? What would being well actually look like for you?
If we start asking ourselves better questions now, the answers we act on in January will feel a lot more aligned.
My Year-End Reflection Guide will help you pause, reset, and realign before the new year.
Until I share it in a couple weeks, here’s a simple journaling/reflection prompt to get you started:
✍️ “If nothing changed in my health for the next 5 years, how would I feel?”
And also “What’s one thing I could do this week to feel a little stronger, clearer, or more grounded?”
