Vision Comes Before Goals

Most people try to plan the new year without ever stopping to envision it.

They don’t struggle because they lack discipline.
They struggle because they skip the step before goal-setting.

An ideal flow actually looks more like this: Reflection → Intention → Vision → Goals → Action

But most people start at Goals.

I talked recently about that tension this time of year—the pull between saying “F it” and trying to keep some kind of rhythm through the holidays.

But here’s the part we don’t talk about enough:
Most people don’t fall off in January because they lack willpower.
They fall off because they never took the time to get clear on WHAT they’re actually building toward, WHO they want to be and WHY it matters.

--> Goals without reflection feel stressful.

--> Plans without vision feel forced.

--> And routines without meaning rarely last.

This is why I believe the weeks before the new year matter so much.

Having some clarity before January even begins removes some of the pressure that comes with trying to “get it right” once the calendar turns. It creates a steadier starting point—one that feels intentional instead of reactive.

This isn’t about making resolutions. It’s about asking better questions.

  • What worked this year? What didn’t? What do I want more of—not just to do, but to FEEL?

That’s where momentum actually comes from.

And that’s exactly why I’m hosting a Vision Board Workshop on January 11*.

Not to just make pretty boards—but to help you translate reflection into something visual, tangible, and motivating.

Something you can come back to throughout the year when motivation dips or clarity fades.

If January has ever felt overwhelming instead of exciting, this might be the missing step.

*This workshop is in-person in Port Imperial, Weehawken, NJ.

I’m also contemplating hosting a virtual workshop in January as well so if that’s something that interests you, reach out and I’ll be sure to keep you posted!
